Amanda: A Handwritten Script Font That Elevates Digital Branding

Two weeks ago, I was finalizing the hero section for a new coaching website—a clean, warm, intentionally human-feeling space for a mindfulness practitioner launching her first online course. The headline needed to feel personal, not polished to sterility. I tried three sans serifs. Then a serif. Then a bolder display font. Nothing landed quite right—until I dropped Amanda into the mockup.

Amanda is a handwritten script font by Jhoen Studios—and it’s not just “handwritten” in name. Every curve, every tapered terminal, every intentional wobble was drawn by hand. It carries rhythm and breath, like ink flowing across paper. In the hero banner, set over a soft-focus background photo of morning light through linen curtains, Amanda immediately softened the hierarchy without sacrificing clarity. It didn’t shout—it invited.

This isn’t a workhorse body font. Amanda lives in the realm of intention: hero titles, section headers, call-to-action buttons with emotional weight (“Begin Your Journey”, “Yes, I’m Ready”), short testimonials, and branded visual accents. Its strength lies in its expressive alternates and swashes—subtle flourishes that appear only when you enable OpenType features or use the PUA-encoded characters. In Figma, I toggled between standard and swash versions for the “Welcome” headline—just one character change, but it shifted the entire tone from friendly to deeply personal.

For digital use, readability remains key—and Amanda delivers when used thoughtfully. At 48px on desktop, with generous letter spacing (I used letter-spacing: .03em), it reads effortlessly. On mobile? I tested at 36px with slightly increased line-height and reduced tracking. Still legible—but only for short phrases. I wouldn’t use it for paragraph text, navigation labels, or small CTAs under 24px. It’s a display font, not a utility font—and that distinction matters for both UX and performance.

I paired Amanda with Inter for body copy—a neutral, highly readable sans serif with excellent screen rendering and variable weight support. The contrast works beautifully: Amanda brings warmth and voice; Inter grounds the layout with clarity and accessibility. For a boutique online store I’m designing next, I’ll likely swap Inter for a gentle serif like IBM Plex Serif in lighter weights—adding editorial sophistication while keeping Amanda as the sole expressive voice in headlines and product banners.

Amanda shines brightest where brand personality needs to be felt, not just seen. On a portfolio homepage for a ceramicist, it styled the artist’s name above her latest collection—soft, tactile, quietly confident. On a campaign landing page for a seasonal workshop series, it transformed “Spring Gatherings” from generic to evocative. Even in email headers or social media cover graphics, its organic flow stands out amid algorithm-driven uniformity.

One thing I double-checked before committing: webfont availability and licensing. Amanda comes in OTF and TTF formats, and Jhoen Studios includes full commercial licensing—critical for client projects, SaaS dashboards, or any site where fonts appear in user-facing interfaces. I confirmed it supports Latin-based languages (including accented characters common in European branding) and verified the PUA encoding lets me access all alternates reliably via CSS @font-face declarations and Unicode escapes. No surprises at launch.

Contrast matters, too. On light backgrounds, Amanda’s fine hairlines read cleanly—especially with a subtle text shadow (text-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0,0,0,.05)) for extra definition. Over dark or image-heavy backgrounds, I increased weight slightly (using the bold variant where available) and added a soft white stroke in CSS—not as a crutch, but as a deliberate design layer. It preserved elegance while ensuring instant legibility.

What surprised me most wasn’t how beautiful Amanda looked—but how much faster users scanned and retained the message. In informal usability checks with five colleagues, every person paused longer on the Amanda-styled headline than on alternatives. Not because it was flashy, but because it signaled authenticity. In an era of AI-generated sameness, a truly handmade script font like Amanda becomes a quiet differentiator—telling visitors, “This was made by someone who cares about how words feel.”

That said, restraint is part of its power. I limited Amanda to three uses per page: the main headline, one subheading (like “What You’ll Learn”), and a single decorative accent—perhaps the first word of a testimonial block. Overuse dilutes impact and risks visual fatigue. It’s a spotlight font, not stage lighting.

If you’re choosing a script font for your next digital project—whether it’s a course sales page, a creative portfolio, a brand kit for a small business, or even a refined Shopify banner—ask yourself: does it need to whisper or declare? Does it need to feel human, not perfect? Does it need to carry warmth without sacrificing polish? Amanda answers yes—to all three.

It belongs in the Script Amp category for good reason: it amplifies voice, emotion, and intention. And as a font built for real-world digital use—not just print or static mockups—it bridges the gap between expressive typography and thoughtful UI design. Just remember to pair it wisely, size it responsively, and let it breathe. When it’s given space to speak, Amanda doesn’t just look good—it helps your brand feel unmistakably, authentically yours.
